Ink tanks changed the economics, not the physics
Epson's tank machines solved the problem everyone had with inkjet: cartridges that cost more than the printer over a couple of years. Refillable tanks brought running cost down to something that competes with laser, which is why they are now common in Delhi offices that print colour.
What they did not change is that ink is a liquid in very fine nozzles. Every fault below follows from that, and none of it is a defect β it is the trade you make for cheap colour pages.
The faults we actually see
Blocked printheads from disuse
The dominant Epson fault by a wide margin. Ink standing in the nozzle evaporates and hardens, and a machine left three weeks prints banded, missing a colour, or nothing at all. Cleaning cycles sometimes recover it β at the cost of a surprising amount of ink β and repeated cycles that do not are telling you the head needs proper attention rather than another cycle.
The honest advice for an office that prints in bursts: this machine is the wrong fit for that pattern, and no repair changes it. A small laser does not care how long it sat.
Waste ink pads reaching capacity
Every cleaning cycle flushes ink somewhere, and that somewhere is an absorbent pad inside the machine. The printer counts what it has sent there and reports when the count reaches the limit. It is a genuine service item, not a phantom fault β and an office running frequent cleaning cycles reaches it much sooner, which loops back to the disuse problem above.
Air in the ink lines
Specific to tank machines. Refilling carelessly, running a tank dry, or moving the printer with tanks part-full can introduce air into the tubes, and the result looks exactly like a blocked head. It is usually recoverable with a proper purge rather than a head replacement, which is worth establishing before anyone quotes for parts.
Feed and roller wear
Ordinary mechanical wear, and the same on these machines as any other. Repeat jams at the start of the paper path mean the pickup roller has glazed. Delhi's humidity makes it worse, because damp paper feeds crooked regardless of roller condition.
Refilling tanks without causing problems
Three things matter, and getting them wrong produces faults people blame on the machine.
- Do not let a tank run empty. Running dry is the most reliable way to draw air into the line and to damage the head, which is the expensive component.
- Use ink matched to the machine. Viscosity and drying behaviour are engineered for those nozzles. Generic ink that flows differently clogs sooner and can be genuinely hard to clear.
- Fill slowly and keep it level. Most spills and most air ingress happen because the bottle was squeezed.
When an Epson is worth repairing
Business-class WorkForce machines generally are β they are built to be serviced and the parts exist. The calculation is harder on entry-level models, where a printhead replacement can approach the price of a new machine, and we would rather tell you that than quote for a repair you should not buy.
