Where Canon machines turn up
Canon laser machines are common in professional offices — clinics, chambers, consultancies, studios — where print quality is noticed and volumes are moderate rather than industrial. The inkjet side, PIXMA, shows up in small offices and home-office setups. The two need quite different conversations at repair time, and lumping them together is how people end up paying to fix machines that should have been replaced.
Common faults on Canon lasers
Drum unit wear
On many Canon designs the drum is a separately replaceable unit rather than being bundled into every cartridge — which is good news, because a worn drum is a specific, fixable part instead of a reason to discard the whole assembly. The symptom is characteristic: a repeating mark down the page at a fixed interval, or a persistent line in the same position on every sheet, that a new toner cartridge does not fix.
Fixing assembly faults
Canon's equivalent of the fuser. When it stops reaching temperature, toner never bonds and rubs off the finished page; when the film sleeve tears, you get repeating creases or marks. Like every fusing component this is a wear part with a service life, and on a machine that has printed steadily for years its failure is a maintenance event rather than a surprise.
Feed and separation problems
Multi-sheet feeds and skewed pages usually mean the separation pad or feed roller has worn. On multi-function machines the document feeder has its own set of rollers, which wear independently — a machine that prints perfectly but jams every time you use the ADF has a feeder problem, not a printer problem, and the two get confused constantly.
Error codes
Canon reports faults as numeric codes, and they are genuinely useful — a code narrows the diagnosis to a subsystem before anyone opens the machine. Write it down exactly as displayed, including any sub-code. It routinely saves a visit.
PIXMA inkjets: the honest position
Most PIXMA faults we see are printheads clogged by disuse. An inkjet left idle for weeks dries in its nozzles, and the result is banding, missing colours, or blank pages despite full cartridges. Cleaning cycles sometimes recover it, at the cost of a surprising amount of ink.
Where they do not recover it, the arithmetic is uncomfortable: on consumer-grade inkjets a printhead replacement can approach the price of a new machine. We will tell you when that is the case rather than quoting a repair you should not buy. If your office prints in occasional bursts, the real fix is not a repair at all — it is a small laser, which does not care how long it sat idle.
Cartridges, drums and print quality
Because drum and toner are often separate on Canon lasers, print-quality faults need one extra question that HP machines usually do not: is this the toner or the drum? Replacing the cartridge when the drum has worn wastes a cartridge and fixes nothing. The pattern on the page tells you which — a fixed-interval repeating defect is the drum, a general fade is the toner. This is also exactly the diagnosis we run before refilling a cartridge, because filling a cartridge that was never the problem helps nobody.

For multi-function machines, note whether the fault happens when printing, when copying, or only through the document feeder. That single detail often locates the problem before we arrive.
