You print a page and a faint, washed-out copy of the letterhead or a heading appears again lower down, on the same sheet. That repeat is called ghosting, and the useful thing about it is that the ghost itself tells you which part is failing — if you know how to read it.
Printer ghosting: an image that was not let go
Two rotating surfaces in a laser printer touch the image on every page: the drum, which carries the toner image before transfer, and the fuser roller, which presses the melted toner into the paper. Both are supposed to end each rotation clean.
Ghosting means one of them did not.
Drum ghosting. After transfer, a cleaning blade scrapes leftover toner off the drum and an erase lamp removes the previous charge image. If the blade is worn or the erase stage is failing, a residue of the last rotation survives, picks up a little toner, and prints again — one full drum rotation below the original.
Fuser ghosting. The fuser melts toner into the page. If the toner does not bond properly — fuser too cool, roller coating worn, toner with the wrong melt point — a trace sticks to the hot roller instead of the paper and is pressed back down one fuser-roller rotation later.
Same symptom, different parts, very different repair costs. So the first job is telling them apart.
Measure the ghost
Take a page with clear ghosting and measure the distance from a feature in the original image to the same feature in the ghost, top edge to top edge.
That distance is the circumference of the roller responsible. Drum diameters vary by machine, but on common desktop lasers the drum repeat is in the rough region of 75 mm and the fuser roller repeat is shorter, often somewhere around 50–60 mm. The exact numbers differ by model — service manuals list them — but the principle holds everywhere: a longer repeat interval points at the drum, a shorter one at the fuser roller.
The mid-page test
If the measurement is ambiguous, this settles it. Print a page that reliably ghosts, and open the toner door when the sheet is about halfway through. The printer stops with the page part-fed: the top portion is fused, the rest carries loose toner that has been transferred but not melted. Handle it gently and do not rub the loose section.
- Ghost visible in the unfused portion — the repeat existed before the fuser touched the paper. That is the drum side: cleaning blade, erase, or a drum at the end of its life.
- Ghost absent from the unfused portion but present on finished pages — the fuser is adding it. Offset toner on the fuser roller.
This one observation separates a drum unit from a fuser repair, which is worth knowing before anyone quotes you for either.
Fixes, cheapest first
- Set the paper type honestly. In the driver, match the media setting to the actual paper — if you print on heavier stock, 100 GSM and up, say so. The fuser runs hotter for heavier settings, the toner bonds, and cool-fuser ghosting disappears. This is the most common fix and it is free.
- Try known-good paper. A fresh ream of ordinary 70–80 GSM copier paper. Odd stock — glossy, coated, very heavy — is a frequent trigger.
- Run a few solid-black pages. For mild fuser offset, several mostly-black pages can carry the residue off the roller. If the ghost fades page by page, that was it — but if it keeps returning, the roller coating or temperature control has a real problem.
- Consider the toner. If ghosting began right after a cartridge change or refill, suspect the powder. Toner must match the fuser's temperature; mismatched refill powder offsets. A refiller who uses powder graded for your engine avoids this — it is one of the differences between proper toner refilling and a bazaar-grade top-up.
- Drum unit. If the mid-page test says drum and the machine has a separate drum unit, a worn drum or cleaning blade near end of life is the likely part. On cartridges with the drum built in, a new cartridge does the same job.
- Fuser. Worn roller coating or a temperature fault. Not a user part — more on that below.
Ghosting versus other repeats
Ghosting is a faint copy of your actual image. If what repeats is a mark, dot or blotch at regular intervals rather than the image itself, that is a defect on a roller surface, which is a different diagnosis — and if you are seeing lines down the page, that is different again, covered in our post on lines on printed pages.
One environmental note: charge behaviour drifts with humidity, and drum ghosting can worsen noticeably in a Delhi monsoon week and ease when the air dries. If ghosting is faint and seasonal, damp air and damp paper are worth ruling out before parts.
When to call a technician
Fuser work is not DIY: the assembly runs hot enough to burn well after the printer is switched off, and reaching it means opening panels near the power supply, whose capacitors hold charge when unplugged. If the ghost measures to the fuser, or a new drum has not cured a drum-interval ghost, that is the point to stop.
